The mask is part of a series of sculptures and drawings of Ohta Hisa (1868–1945), a Japanese actress known as Hanako. Rodin portrayed her in various moods, and there is some evidence that he planned to use one of the masks as a model for a portrait of Beethoven, but apparently he never pursued the project.
