The blunt, spatulate blade is a serving knife (présentoire in French). It is etched with a calendar for 1678–1700 and the name Johann Adam Elinger (perhaps the engraver). The silver mounts are later than the blade.
Inscription: Inscribed: (on blade, below zodiacal sign for March) Joh. Adam; (on blade, below zodiacal sign for April) Elinger. L

Notes of onscription: Dr. Nickel has suggested that the letter L (?) following the name Elinger might stand for lineavit (?) [trans.: hea has drawn it] which would indicate that Joh. Adam Elinger was probably the etcher.
