The Spanish inscription on the barrel of this fowling piece translates, "Gift to His Majesty the King, Don Carlos 4, [in] the Year 1796." The gun probably was presented to Charles IV (reigned 1788–1808) by the two gunmakers from Eibar, an important center of arms production in the Basque provinces.
Inscription: Inlaid in gold on the barrel: REGALO A.S.M. EL REY Dⁿ CARLOS 4° ANO DE 1796 (Gift to His Majesty the King, Don Carlos 4, [in] the Year of 1796);

On the lock: JVAN NAVARO 37;

Chiseled on the counter-lockplate: JVAN NAVARO

Marking: Stamped on the barrel near the breech: the mark of Antonio Gisasola.
