Obverse, Dionysos with satyr and maenads
Reverse, maenads

The god Dionysos brought to mankind the gift of wine with its power to suppress misery and afford escape into an altered state. His followers–the half-animal satyrs and wild maenads–express this release. Here a satyr plays the kithara, a large lyre used for public performances, while two maenads dance.
