Terracotta pyxis (box)

Related to the Painter of Munich 1842

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 155

Around the box, warriors arming
On the lid, athletes

This engaging little box is decorated with rapidly executed images of warriors putting on their greaves (shin guards) while their spears and shields are held by female members of the household. Greaves and ankle guards were hammered from sheet bronze and retained considerable tensile strength, allowing them to be snapped onto the raised leg.
