While nonfigural motifs often frame or emphasize a specific zone or subject, they can also serve as the primary decoration. In this respect, it is useful to compare the role of ornament in architecture. The alternating stylized palmettes and lotos flowers represent a combination that later becomes standard on the necks of neck-amphorae.
