The silver grip has a hammered surface popular in domestic silverware of the period. Its design reflects the elegant, whimsical style of Art Nouveau. The original design for the grip, dated 1883, is preserved in the Tiffany archives.
Inscription: Inscribed along the top of the barrel: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS U.S.A. PAT'D JAN. 17 & 24.65/JULY 11. 65. AUG. 24. 69. JULY 25. 71. DEC. 2. 79. MAY 11 & 25, 1880.
Stamped on the inside face of the cylinder: Serial No. 70002, with letters "n" over "p" between the chambers. A similar mark is struck on the underside of the frame in front of the trigger-guard.
On the underside of the barrel: NP surmounted by an eagle, .38 .767" .3.5 TONS.
Stamped on the butt: TIFFANY & CO/STERLING/M.
