The medallions decorating each side show a profile portrait of Pope Julius III (Giovanni Maria del Monte, 1487–1555, elected pope in 1550). This helmet is a precursor to the Brescian-made armor traditionally worn by the Papal Swiss Guard beginning in the late sixteenth century, versions of which are still worn by the Papal Guard today.
