The large lion mask and crescent pattern of the borders identify this pommel plate as part of a complex group of similarly decorated armors that were made in Augsburg around 1550. The Metropolitan Museum possesses more than forty elements from this group. Their distinctive decoration can be attributed to the Augsburg etcher Jörg Sorg the Younger (ca. 1522–1603) on the basis of an album of Sorg's workshop drawings that record many of the armors decorated for his various clients.
Ex. Coll.: Ralph Bernal, London; Albert Denison, first Baron Londesborough; Wililam Henry Denison, Earl of Londesborough; Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duc de Dino, Paris
