Obverse, warrior departing Reverse, satyrs and maenad
Although the Kleophrades Painter used the red-figure technique predominantly, he was perfectly conversant with black-figure, as indicated by his Panathenaic prize amphorae. While the decoration of this vase is similar to that of examples of the late sixth century B.C., the fluidity of the incision, the rendering of the satyrs' tails, and the procession of animals drawn without articulation indicate a red-figure hand.
