Arbus is one of the most influential portrait photographers of the last half-century. Her lacerating matter-of-fact pictures of the normal and the marginal in American society have forever altered our expectations of photographic portraits. Arbus refrained from any explicit social commentary (she photographed rallies for and against war), but this powerful image, made when the most intense protests about America's role in Vietnam were taking place, presents a disturbing image about children and war.
Inscription: Inscribed, dated, and signed in ink, verso along bottom edge: "Boy with straw hat button and flag in a prowar parade", "N.Y.C. 1967", "Diane Arbus"
