In a sequence of three nearly identical poses, of which this is the most sucessful, the countess isolates her eyes with the help of a small oval mirror. She moves it until her reflected gaze connects with Pierson's lens. A striking example of interaction between photographer and sitter, the image draws the viewer into a voyeuristic game.
