Robert C. Winthrop, 1809-1894, a native of Boston and a descendant of John Winthrop, 1587-1649. He represented Massachusetts in the House of Representatives and took over Daniel Webster's seat in the Senate. Winthrop was a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society from 1839-1894, and in April of 1855 he became president and served for thirty years. The DAB describes him as "somewhat of a dandy," a comment somewhat born out by this daguerreotype.
