Biography: Author, editor and publisher James Thomas Fields (1817-1881) became a junior partner in the notable Boston publishing house Ticknor, Reed and Fields in 1839. Known for his business sense and discriminating literary taste, he mainly published works by the foremost contemporary American and British authors of the day, many of whom became his close friends. He was aided in his literary pursuits by his wife Annie Adams Fields (cat. nos. 152-54 Young America). From 1862 to 1870, he was the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, before retiring from business and devoting himself to lecturing and writing. His books are largely reminiscences of literary friendships, including Yesterdays with Authors (1872), Hawthorne (1876), and In and Out of Doors with Charles Dickens (1876).
