Biography: American actress Charolette Cushman (1916-1876) made a reputation for herself by playing both male and female roles, most famously as the prostitute Nancy Skyes in Oliver Twist and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. After performing in cities across the United States, Cushman headed to London in the mid 1840s and was recognized as one of the greatest actresses of her time. There she met Matilda Hays, author and British translator of George Sand, who was breifly her romantic partner on stage and continued to be her lover for over ten years. The couple left London and lived in the U.S. for a few years before retiring to Rome in 1852, where they enjoyed the company of other female writers and artists, including Grace Greenwood, Harriet Hosmer, Mary Edmonia Lewis and Emma Stebbins.
