According to family tradition these chairs stood in Phyfe's house on Fulton Street. Possibly his son William (b. 1799), his grandson Duncan, his great granddaughter Mrs. Emma Phyfe Purdy (Mrs. Lovell Purdy) subsequently Mrs. Emma A. Stanton, who owned the chairs until her death in 1931. By bequest to her friend Mrs. Henry C. (Ida Louise) Opdycke, 1931-about 1945, her granddaughter Mrs. Alfred (Elisabeth Opdycke) Joltin, about 1945-1971.
