Title of books 1: The Purgatorio; 2: The Paradiso; 3: The Inferno

This is the first volume in a three volume set given to Evans by Kirstein on December 30, 1931. The next year, the two would begin work together on Evans's first major series, a study of Victorian architecture. Inside the backcover is a loose magazine clipping from "The New Yorker" Sept. 7, 1963.
