Working in the street with a wide-angle lens, Winogrand photographed unabashedly, often focusing on people and situations upon which we are taught not to stare or publicly comment. He was particularly attracted to, and skilled at capturing, incidents such as this one, which combine psychological intensity with gestural beauty. The photograph suggests a modern-day passion play enacted before a crowd of onlookers on Easter Sunday in which a risen Christ with outstretched arms runs toward the figures of John the Baptist and Mary Magdalen, who each turn away in pained disbelief.
