[Nijinsky in Le Spectre de la rose]

Rudolf Balogh Hungarian

Not on view

Rudolph Balogh photographed Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950), the lead dancer of Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, during the company's March 1912 season in Budapest. The dancer who brought a hitherto unknown glamour to male roles and created the first modernist ballets, Nijinsky was particularly admired for his total immersion in his roles. In Le Spectre de la Rose, Nijinsky performed as the spirit of a rose appearing
in the dream of a young girl half-asleep after a ball. To help convey the unhuman sweetness of a floral being, he created makeup that blurred his features-his eyebrows vaguely suggesting an insect and his mouth, rose petals.
