The photograph used as a model by Schad for the large painted portrait "Beatrix" dates from the Countess's first stay in Paris, from 1856 to 1857. Enveloped in a large black cape, she is seen leaning against a French window in what appears to be Pierson's studio in the boulevard de Capucines.

Title inscribed by Countess on glass plate; title may refer to Ernest Legouvé play, performed at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, March 25, 1861, with Ristori (one of the Countess's favorite actresses) in the title role; see also larger version with applied color from Gilman Paper Company Collection (2005.100.406).
