The Gilman Collection has a similar case in its collection (2005.100.230). As the image depicts F.D. Langenheim (1849-1939) at approximately one-year old, this image can be comparably dated to c.1850. In 1846 Frederick Langenheim purchased a patent to color daguereotypes from the Swiss miniaturist and daguerreotypist Johann B. Isenring. Frederick preceeded to improve uppon the process to fix the color more permanently. 1846 can therefore be used as an outset date for this daguerreotype.
