Inscription: Pen, brown ink, upper left, in the hand of Louis Barnet: Ce croquis que Carpeaux appelait l'improvisateur / a été composé par lui d'après une scene / de buveurs de Civita Vecchia, c'est un espèce / de chanteur qui improvise ce qui lui passe / par la tête au milieu des paysans qui / l'écoutent en bouvant. / Ceci lui plaisait beaucoup il avait le / projet de le reproduire soit en tableau / soit en bas relief. (L. Barnet) [This sketch that Carpeaux called L'Improvisateur, was composed after a scene of a group of drinkers in Civita Vecchia. He represents a singer who improvises on whatever happens to pass through his mind while he is amongst peasants who listen to him as they drink. The scene pleased Carpeaux and he planned to use it for a painting or a bas-relief.]
