Faust, encountering Margaret in the street, addresses her: "Ma belle Demoiselle, oserais je vous offrif mon bras et vous reconduire chez vous?" ["My lovely young lady, may I perhaps venture to give you my arm and be your escort home?"] Faust's advances are unsuccessfull. The young woman frees her arm and departs.
