This is a rare pair of American dueling pistols in the English style. North was the first contractor of military pistols made for the federal government following the Revolution.
Inscription: Inscribed on top of each barrel: Connecticut; stamped above each breech plug, in a gilded oval: S. NORTH Middletown, Conn.

Marking: Stamped on the underside of the barrel of one pistol (96.5.36): 18; on the underside of the other pistol's barrel (96.5.149): 23.
