Seated Buddha

Vietnam

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 245

This is one of a small group of early Southeast Asian Buddhas. The figure sits in a cross-legged posture with his hands in a gesture signifying meditation (dhyanamudra). The statue is in a style of the seventh century associated with the Mekong Delta and the Zhenla kingdom.
