Multicolored silk threads wrap around the bamboo to form the image of a red bat holding a jeweled disc. The bat is enclosed by blue scrollwork against the background of a floral scroll in delicate shades of green, cream, and yellow. Since the Chinese word for “bat” is a homophone with that for “good fortune,” the animal is generally an auspicious symbol.
