This choice corner of nature, intimate and secluded in feeling, epitomizes the landscape painting of the early Southern Song Painting Academy. The exacting delineation of rocks, foliage, and gnarled tree trunks recalls Northern Song techniques, while the soft reeds of the marsh and the misty distance display the simpler, more suggestive style of the Southern Song. Considerably smaller than the tall hanging scrolls and large handscrolls favored by Northern Song artists, fan paintings were ideally suited to the highly focused visions of the Southern Song period.
