Dish with chrysanthemum-petal rim

China

Not on view

The shape of this thin-cored lacquer dish has parallels with ceramics manufactured in northern China during the Song period, such as Ding ware from Hebei. The gilt decoration on its surface adds another level of subtle beauty. Much of the gilt decoration on this dish has worn off with age and use, but a floral spray design and geometric scroll can still be seen in the center and on the rim, respectively.
