Hunt lived in Hastings during the latter decades of his career and here sketched fishermen’s huts on the beach, capturing the forms with a fresh range of colored washes combined with pen and ink. The subject is unusual for the artist, who normally worked assiduously on detailed genre pieces and still-lives for exhibition and to sell to clients. He likely made this drawing of humble wooden structures with pinkish roofs, divided by picket fences, for his own pleasure.
