The kilns near Dehua, in Fujian Province, opened in the late thirteenth century and flourished from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. Characterized by thick, lustrous glazes, Dehua ware is often known in Western writings as blanc de chine, or “China white.” Budai, who lived in the eighth or ninth century, was noted for his round stomach and his affinity for children.
