The composition and all of the motifs in this picture and its pendant, Flowers by a Stone Vase (48.187.737), enjoyed great currency in the work of Faes and his contemporaries, invariably derive from the work of Jan van Huysum, and may be traced back through him to Jan Davidsz. de Heem and other seventeenth-century painters in Holland and Flanders. It is doubtful that Faes intended any of the symbolic meanings that originally were attached to these motifs.
