Edward Grosvenor Paine. Inventory of the miniatures in the Fredrick collection. 1960, p. 17, no. 134, states that this miniature and its pendant (MMA 62.122.118) are signed "Braun" [but see Ref. Reynolds and Baetjer 1996] and dates them about 1820.
Bodo Hofstetter. Letter to Katharine Baetjer. June 19, 1995, suggests the costume is Bavarian, probably from Munich.
Graham Reynolds with the assistance of Katharine Baetjer. European Miniatures in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Exh. cat., The Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York, 1996, p. 199, no. 286, ill., state that no trace of a signature can now be seen on this miniature or on its pendant (MMA 62.122.118); call the works German and date them about 1810.
This picture is pendant to MMA 62.122.118, and both are by the same artist. The sitters may be husband and wife.
