Nuns at Work

Follower of Alessandro Magnasco Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 539

Magnasco’s idiosyncratic vision combined densely populated, often slightly fantastical, subjects with a dark palette and loose touch. His images of monks and nuns in theatrical, cavernous interiors were some of his most popular, and they sparked many imitators, including the unknown author of this painting. The paint surface lacks the surety, detail, and quickness of touch found in Magnasco’s own work.
