Interior of a Gothic Church at Night

and Frans Francken III Flemish
ca. 1660
Not on view
The sculpted and human figures and the altarpiece (based on the Rubens at Mechlin) were executed by "the young Francken," as the signature attests. He frequently collaborated with the architectural painters Pieter Neeffs the Elder and the Younger. Small nocturnal views, with their jewel-like effects of artificial illumination, were popularized in the genre by Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger (Flemish, born about 1580, died 1649).
