Art Bulletin 58 (March 1978), pp. 16, 19, 23, figs. 15, 54 (detail), notes that the punches used in the painting come from the studio of Icilio Federico Joni [or Ioni; 1866–1946], and that the work may have been painted by Scapecchi, from whom it was purchased and who worked with Joni, or by Joni himself.

This is a reduced copy with slight variations of the left wing of Neroccio's triptych of 1476 in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena. The Museum also owns a second, less accurate, copy of the original work (07.24.24).
