During the 1920s, Nesterov painted several images of contemplative women wearing traditional costumes, set in wooded landscapes. Our painting is a replica of one dated 1918, which was sold at Sotheby's, London, on November 26, 2007, no. 21, as "By the Lake." Another, nearly identical, version is dated 1929 (National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk).
