Blechen gained an appreciation for the spontaneity of sketching out of doors during a visit to Dresden in 1823, when he met Dahl and perhaps Friedrich. In this view of the largest public park in Berlin, the combination of light, foliage, and water encouraged him to vary his handling of the brush, which is especially lively where the ends of the branches alternate with reflections on the pond's surface.
