In 1823, Reinhold visited the Gulf of Sorrento with fellow artists Johann Joachim Faber (1778–1846) and Carl Wilhelm Götzloff (1799–1866), all of whom painted this view. The present composition exists in another version, usually dated about 1824 (Neue Pinakotek, Munich).

Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 139, no. 113, ill. (color), calls it "Terrace of the Capuchin Garden, Sorrento" and dates it 1823–24.

Reinhold painted a version of this composition (oil on canvas, 42 x 55 cm), usually dated about 1824, which is in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich (see Winkler 1988).

The same view was painted by the artists who accompanied Reinhold to Sorrento in 1823, Carl Wilhelm Götzloff (see Ernst-Alfred Lentes, Carl Wilhelm Götzloff, Ein Dresdner Romantiker mit napolitanischer Heimat: Monographie mit Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Stuttgart, 1996, p. 150, no. 14, fig. 37, as dated 1827 and located in a private collection) and Johan Joachim Faber (1828; Hamburger Kunsthalle, 2036).
