(color), states it appears to be the only known pure landscape by the artist, known more for his images of horses and Parisians under the Directoire; notes that it bears his monogram; suggests that his collaboration with Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld may have prompted Vernet to experiment with painting oudoors in oil on paper.
Charlotte Gere inPlein-Air Painting in Europe, 1780–1850. Exh. cat., Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art. Shizuoka, 2004, pp. 56–57, no. 17, ill. (color), notes the irony that the son of plein-air oil sketch theorist Joseph Vernet should have produced only one such study; remarks upon the dark color scheme and that it might be a reflection of the Anglomania rampant among French artists during the first quarter of the nineteenth century.
Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 148, no. 140, ill. (color), calls it "Landscape".
