(color), states that the study has been identified by Denis Coutagne as a view from the Villa Medici and that it is difficult to date it since the artist spent the majority of his career in Rome.

(color), calls it "Attributed to François-Marius Granet" and notes that an outright attribution to Granet was questioned during the 2002 colloquium on oil sketches "The 'Plein-Air' Landscape: 18th- and 19th-Century Oil Sketches" at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, in conjunction with New York 2002–3.
