Jennifer Tonkovich in The Thaw Collection: Master Drawings and Oil Sketches, Acquisitions Since 1994. Exh. cat., Pierpont Morgan Library. New York, 2002, pp. 176–77, no. 80, ill. (color), states that the study has been identified by Denis Coutagne as a view from the Villa Medici and that it is difficult to date it since the artist spent the majority of his career in Rome.

Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 128, no. 81, ill. (color), calls it "Attributed to François-Marius Granet" and notes that an outright attribution to Granet was questioned during the 2002 colloquium on oil sketches "The 'Plein-Air' Landscape: 18th- and 19th-Century Oil Sketches" at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, in conjunction with New York 2002–3.
