Old Master and 19th Century Drawings. Christie's, New York. January 22, 2004, p. 71, no. 61, ill. (color), states that Nicholas Turner confirms the attribution to Mola and suggests dating the picture about 1651–52, when the artist was working on the decoration of the Palazzo Pamphilj at Nettuno on the coast south of Rome; mentions similar oil sketches by Mola in Düsseldorf and a more closely related drawing of "Trees at the edge of a grassy slope, with a rocky outcrop to the left" in a private collection, Paris.
