Tile from an Inscriptional Frieze

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 455

This frieze tile bears a Qur’anic inscription set in modeled relief against a pattern of scrolls and dense foliage, with lotus blossoms on a vegetal background above. Inscriptional friezes composed of tiles like this example were often set at eye level above dados of stars and crosses in palaces, mosques, and mausoleums.
