Kodaira Tomi, who appears in other Goyō works, was the model for this sensual woman. She holds a narrow green sash between her teeth and her bare toes peek out beneath her long undergarment (nagajuban), which is decorated with motifs of red butterflies and flowers on a white ground. Goyō, who had created a series depicting beautiful women in 1920, was ascending in skill and fame when he died suddenly and tragically of meningitis, at the age of forty-one.
