The ancient Chinese legend of Penglai, a spiritual mountain of eternal life located in the eastern seas, lives on in this late-Edo-period robe. In Japan, the fantasy island, Mount Hōrai, became stylized as a gathering of cranes and tortoises in a bright landscape, like this one, dominated by pine, plum, and bamboo. The theme of Mount Hōrai was common in bridal garments.
