The Ottoman interest in royal portraiture expressed itself in the production of illustrated manuscripts and albums containing images of the succession of sultans. This painting, from an album containing a series of similar sultan portraits, has been identified as a depiction of the early seventeenth-century Ottoman sultan Ahmet I.
