The Bara Imambara (large Shi'i relic house) complex is the most imposing monument in Lucknow. Built by Nawab Asaf al‑Daula ca. 1784–91, the complex comprises the massive Imambara, a grand congregational mosque, and several interlocking forecourts. In this architectural view drawn by an Indian artist in the style of a European topographical study, the Imambara’s original forecourt and Asaf al‑Daula’s palace (to the left of the retaining wall), both demolished after the Indian uprising of 1857, are still visible.
Private Collection, England (since ca. 1800); [ Terence McInerney, New York, until 2008; sold to MMA]
