Unlike other presentation portraits by Ingres in this gallery, this one appears unfinished. Even its signature, Ing, is incomplete, and the inscription is only partially legible. The ethereal figure may have been a British subject who posed for Ingres in Rome in the early nineteenth century. Her exotic headdress and Empire clothing and jewelry accord with such a date. The drawing remained in the artist’s studio at his death, further supporting its presumed role as a study.
Signature: Signed by a later hand at the lower left: Ing.

Inscription: Inscribed by a later hand at the top center: Me Rhodn [?]
The artist's widow, nee Delphine Ramel (1808-1887); Camille Groult, by 1911 (or 1905); Groult sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 21-22 June 1920, no. 165 (as "Mme Rhode"); Dr. Lucien-Graux; his widow, Mme Lucien-Graux (born Flavigny) until 1956; Acquired by Robert Lehman by 1957.
