New York, 1992, pp. 42, 46–47, fig. 15 (color), states that this work exemplifies the drawings Guston made during the early to mid–1960s, which relate to his paintings and drawings from the 1940s, particularly "Tormentors" (1947–48, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art); also suggests that this picture's forms prefigure the bean–shaped heads in paintings from the 1970s.
