Arts and Decoration 4 (August 1914), pp. 370-71 (probably this work), describes Bellows' subjects wherein energy predominates—the pant, clash and strife (for example) of a struggling mass of men and horses disputing the directions of a polo ball.

"A Polo Picture by George Bellows." Vanity Fair 30 (August 1928), p. 38, ill. (cropped), calls this "one of the best" of several sketches made by Bellows during a visit to the Lakewood, N.J. estate of George Gould.

Frank Seiberling, Jr. "George Bellows, 1882-1925, His Life and Development as an Artist." PhD diss., University of Chicago, 1948, pp. 82-83, lists it in the collection of Lesley G. Sheafer, New York; praises the deft modeling of the horses, suggesting that even Degas could not have done better.
