New York, 1997, pp. 15, 23–2, fig. 13, identifies this drawing as a copy of a photograph taken by the Bauhaus–trained Fritz Goro in the May 9, 1938 issue of Life Magazine depicting an abrasives sandblaster wearing a goggled hood to protect him from inhaling sand and dust.

David Anfam in No Limits, Just Edges: Jackson Pollock Paintings on Paper. Exh. cat., Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. New York, 2005, p. 30, fig. 15 (color), calls this drawing a "one–off piece"'; claims that this "mask" was a template for constructing dolls' heads; states that it comes from an earlier drawing of a sandblaster's protective helmet that Pollock saw in Life Magazine; relates the image of an actual mask to "veiling" of imagery in later years.
